Loss of vision has devastating consequences everywhere, but particularly in a third-world subsistence environment. It is estimated that as much as 80% of all visual impairment in Nepal is avoidable or treatable. Three young New York City based ophthalmologists decided to do …something about it, and embarked on an ambitious expedition to provide first-class eye care, including cataract surgeries, in remote Himalayan villages. Each of the doctors will briefly relate their experiences of their first outreach expedition, traveling literally half-way around the world, to elevations above 9,000’ to hold a series of free eye camps, accepting and treating all in need. What was their experience? Did they make a difference? Would they do it again?
Sanjay R. Kedhar, MD – Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College, and the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. Dr. Kedhar specializes in the medical and surgical management of patients with uveitis and other autoimmune and infectious eye diseases.
Christopher C. W. Teng, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College and The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Teng is an expert on the medical and surgical management of glaucoma.
Travis Jenkins, MD – Dr. Jenkins is a third year Ophthalmology Resident at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.
Scott Hamilton, CCOA, MED’82 – Scott is a Director of The Explorers Club, and Dooley Intermed International, and has organized numerous expeditions to the Himalayas. He is also a certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
All are members of the world-renowned ISMS-Operation Restore Vision team, based at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.
